What the service offers The project aims to respond to the identified need for psychological approaches and support to be made more available to primary care professionals. The project aims to respond to that need by: Identifying good quality self-help materials focused on promoting the mental health and well being of children and families.A scheme that allows professionals to formally recommend resources to families by writing out a recommendation slip allowing them to borrow the resource from a local library for an agreed length of time. The book list addresses common issues for families including:Anger, behavioural issues, bereavement, bullying, confidence and self esteem, development, divorce, new parents, potty training, sadness, sibling rivalry, sleep, step families, teenagers, worries and fears,
Who is the service for? All of the resources on the recommended list for this scheme aim to promote the psychological well being of children and families. The current list is predominantly made up of books for parents or carers (with those for children being highlighted.) The scheme will not be suitable for all families. It is aimed at those for whom problems are causing mild to moderate distress and requires that they be able to exercise a fairly high degree of independent action. Future development of the scheme will explore audio-visual formats. The selection process also highlighted a number of resources for professionals. A set of professional resources has been provided to key professional groups, to aid their work in supporting families.
What is the procedure for referrals? The service does not provide face-to-face support. The scheme provides a way of being able to recommend a self-help resource with confidence, knowing that it has been reviewed by both professionals and parents.
Is there a charge for this service? No, there is no charge.
